Fort-de-France, Martinique

We spent two days in Fort-de-France, the capital of the French départament of Martinique. It was a gorgeous but very run down city with an unmistakably French feel.

As we walked around Fort-de-France, I remember thinking how remote and strange everything was. Later in the trip, our perspective changed -- as we explored Dominica, we'd refer back to how developed and modern Martinique was.

I really liked this pharmacy sign.

At the bar attached to our hotel, we got cold drinks to cool off. The weather was cooler than DC, but it was still hot, especially for my parents coming from SF.
Me & Max at the hotel bar.

The lobby of our hotel, L'Impératrice. It's named for Empress Josephine, who was born on a small plantation in Martinique and went on to marry Napoleon.

The park right across from our hotel.

Bibliotéque Schoeler, named for a famous French abolitionist. He helped abolish slavery in Martinique in 1848.

View of Fort-de-France from the ferry to Dominica. This was while the ride was still pleasant...later on, it got really rough and I almost fell down the stairs trying to get back to my seat. Meanwhile, everyone around us got sea sick, and the waves were quite exciting.
